Research Through Design Conference

RTD is an experimental conference that supports the dissemination of design-led research. RTD comprises a curated exhibition of design research artifacts from all areas of design accompanied by in-depth, round–table discussions in ‘Rooms of Interest’. With this format, RTD aims to present an alternative to the traditional conference presentation of papers in darkened auditoriums, and supports a more discursive, synergistic setting that places the sharing of designed artifacts (whether tangible or not) at the heart of proceedings.

RTD 2019 will revolve around the theme ‘Method & Critique’ and their assumed incompatibility. We will address this friction productively by exploring various contemporary shifts in design research and practice, whether material, technological or socio-political, which either surface such a friction as a necessary collision or call for reconceptualisation.

Workshops: Practice-led Research
The RTD workshops instantiate a breadth of research through design practices, and demonstrate how these practices enable the generation and sharing of knowledge. Workshops provide conference delegates with the opportunity to come together as co-designers and co-researchers in mini projects, and immerse themselves in the shared action of practice-based research methodologies.

Participants of the RTD workshops have the opportunity to reflect on design research as it happens. In that, workshops emphasize the role of the narrative of process as a research artefact in its own right. The research findings and artifacts generated in the workshops are featured in the conference exhibition, acting as enablers and catalysts for conference debates.
