A talking head on a table, a ghost appearing on stage, stereo viewers that show you the Egyptian pyramids in three dimensions: in the nineteenth century optical illusions became a sensation. The exhibition The Great Illusion - 200 Years of Virtual Realities shows that the fascination with illusions then and today is not so different.
Today, Immersive technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality are being applied in various social fields, such as education, healthcare and the entertainment industry. These technologies bring opportunities and challenges. How should we deal with them?
On Friday, June 21, the Rathenau Institute and Teylers Museum are organizing a symposium following the exhibition. In this symposium you will analyze the opportunities and challenges of immersive technologies from the perspective of public values, such as privacy, self-determination and democracy. Can we still speak of illusions or are we now dealing with new realities?
