Social Design to Change Collective Behaviour
- ENERGY AND BEHAVIOUR
- DESIGN FOR CHANGE
- TALK
What if you could seduce collectives to save energy together? It would be a great opportunity. But it requires behavioural change of large groups whereas every individual has their own personal motivations and barriers. Muzus explains how social design is applied to change collective behavior in order to save energy and adapt to climate change together, illustrated by two different design cases.
The Solar Coach
Appartments often have large shared roofs. However, they are rarely covered by solar panels. One in ten homes in the Netherlands is an apartment in a homeowners’ association. A great opportunity to accelerate energy saving. But how do you convince a varied group of homeowners to take these steps together? Current solutions focus on the technical, legal and economical aspects of the process. The key to success? The solar coaches support the collectives in the social aspect of the decision making. Muzus will share insights from the design research, segmentation of homeowners, customer journeys and the service blueprint of the solar coach service.
Climate adaptation in a poor working-class neighbourhood
The poor working-class neighbourhood Fellenoord in Breda faces a challenge: little green space and open water, stony gardens and disadvantaged social position. How can we make this area more liveable in co-creation with the residents? How can we activate this collective to become climate resistant? Muzus will share insights from design interventions in this neighbourhood, like ‘plant-bingo’ and surrealistic storytelling about ‘Vroetels’ in extreme weather.
